[지디넷코리아]아이폰으로 3G 네트워크를 이용해 전세계 아이폰끼리 무료 영상통화가 가능한 애플리케이션(이하 앱)이 나왔다.

스카이프는 iOS 4.0 탑재 아이폰에서 3G 및 와이파이(WiFi)를 이용해 무료 영상통화를 할 수 있는 ‘아이폰용 스카이프 영상통화’ 앱을 한국을 포함한 전세계에 출시했다고 30일 밝혔다. 

애플에 따르면 올해 5대 무료 아이폰 앱 중 하나는 화상통화를 꼽고 있다. 이에 아이폰용 스카이프 앱은 가입자 간 무료 통화에 이어 무료 영상통화까지 서비스를 확대하게 된 것. 

이번에 출시된 버전은 아이폰과 아이팟터치4세대에서도 무료로 영상통화 발신 및 수신이 가능하며 아이패드와 아이팟터치3세대는 영상통화 수신이 가능하다. 이를통해 전세계 스카이프에 로그인 되어 있는 2천500만의 동시 접속자와 통화가 가능해졌으며, 아이폰용 스카이프 앱을 더욱 다양하게 이용할 수 있게 되었다. 

닐 스티븐스 스카이프 컨슈머 비즈니스 본부장은 “스카이프 영상통화(PC+웹캠이용)는 올해 상반기 동안 스카이프 무료통화의 약 40%를 차지할 만큼 많이 사용되고 있으며, 고객들은 PC뿐만 아니라 스마트폰 등 모바일에서도 영상통화를 이용하길 원했다”고 개발 취지를 밝혔다. 또한, “스카이프 영상통화를 집이나 직장의 데스크 탑과 모바일 그리고 TV로 가지고 옴으로써, 스카이프는 전세계 수많은 사람들이 영상통화로 중요한 순간을 나눌 수 있도록 했다”고 덧붙였다.

옥션 스카이프 배동철 상무는 “이번 스카이프 영상통화 앱은 스마트폰, 태블릿PC, 노트북, 일반 PC까지 영상통화가 상호 가능하다는 점에서 기존의 영상통화와는 차별이 된다”고 설명하며, “영상통화 활용범위가 기존보다 획기적으로 확대될 것으로 보인다”고 전망했다. 

새로운 아이폰용 스카이프 앱은 iOS 4.0 이상 버전에서 사용가능하며 아이폰4, 아이폰3GS, 아이팟터치4세대에서 이용할 수 있다. 카메라 기능이 없는 아이패드와 아이팟터치3세대는 영상통화 수신만 가능하다. PC와 영상통화를 할 경우, PC에 설치된 스카이프는 윈도우용 스카이프 4.2 버전 이상, 맥용 스카이프 2.8 이상이어야 하며 리눅스용 스카이프가 설치된 PC도 가능하다. 아수스 비디오폰도 아이폰과 영상통화가 가능하다. 

아이폰용 스카이프 영상통화 앱은 애플 앱스토어에서 'skype'를 검색한 후 무료 다운로드 받을 수 있다.
