사례1. 천안에 있는 이생테크노팩(주). 즉석 밥 제품 포장용기 같은 식품 포장재를 생산하는 업체다. 2006년부터 산학연 공동기술개발사업에 참여해 장기보존이 가능하고 전자렌지의 고열에도 잘 견뎌 냄새가 나지 않는 다층 포장용기 기술을 개발했다. 기술개발 이후인 2009년을 시작으로 향후 5년간 125억원의 매출이 예상되고 있다. 사례2. 아산에 있는 에버테크노(주)는 휴대폰 생산자동화 장비, LCD/반도체 검사장비 등을 생산하는 업체다. 2008년부터 산학연 공동기술개발사업에 참여해 ‘평판디스플레이 미세형상 3차원 검사시스템’을 개발했다. 최종 제품의 화질을 향상시킬 수 있는 순수 국내 기술로, 초정밀 분야 핵심기반기술을 확보했다는 평가를 받고 있다. 특히 반도체와 전자산업 등의 타 분야에 활용도가 매우 높다. 선문대학교 중소기업산학협력센터가 지역 중소기업과 손잡고 일궈낸 성과들이다. 선문대 센터는 1996년 중소기업청으로부터 ‘산학연공동기술개발 지역컨소시엄’ 사업자로 선정된 이후 173개 중소기업의 애로기술을 해결해 주었다. 최근 3년간 실적만 따져도 특허출원등록 13건, 시제품 제작 14건, 공정개선 27건 등 70여 개 지역 중소기업이 안고 있는 기술적 어려움을 해소했다. 이 같은 성과의 중심에 조해용 센터장(선문대 산업기술연구소장. 환경공학과)이 있다. 그는 2006년 이후 5년 동안 센터장을 맡아오면서 기술기반이 취약한 지역 중소기업의 경쟁력을 높이는데 앞장서 왔다. 이 같은 공로가 인정돼 최근 코엑스 열린 11회 중소기업기술혁신대전에서 대통령 표창을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. 다음은 조 교수와의 일문일답. -수상소감은. 산학연 공동기술개발 사업이 올해로 18년째를 맞는다. 지난 1994년부터 늘기 시작한 중소기업산학협력센터가 지금은 전국에 350개나 된다. 이중 가장 우수하다는 평가를 받아 기쁘다. 선문대 교수들의 적극적인 협조가 있었기에 가능한 일이었다. -중소기업산학협력센터가 하는 일은. 말 그대로 중소기업의 애로기술을 해결해 주는 역할을 한다. 기업이 연구 과제를 의뢰해 오면 센터는 해당 분야의 전문가를 찾아 연결해준다. 사업비는 중소기업청이 절반을 대고 나머지는 충남도와 기업이 25%씩 분담한다. -주로 어떤 형태의 과제를 해결하나. 사업 초기에는 불량품 개선이나 공정과정의 문제점을 해결해주는 형태의 과제가 주를 이뤘다. 하지만 최근에는 신기술 개발 쪽에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 하나의 중소기업 보다는 관련성 있는 부품 업체가 협력해 새로운 기술을 개발하는 과제를 수행하도록 유도하고 있다. 이 때문에 사업예산도 많게는 2억~3억원 정도로 커졌다. -선문대 센터는 어떤 분야에 강점이 있나. 전자와 환경 분야다. 아산과 천안지역에는 전자 부품업체가 많다. 이 때문에 선문대는 오래 전부터 이 분야를 특성화해 왔다. 미개척 분야라고 할 수 있는 환경 분야 역시 그 중요성이 커지고 있다. 폐수 배출업체가 수생식물로 수질을 개선할 수 있는 시스템을 구축하거나 생태 방음벽으로 소음을 차단하는 등의 시스템 구축이 가능해졌다. 생태 방음벽을 유지 관리하는 기술은 특허를 가지고 있다. -대학에 주는 효과는. 우선 교수진이 현장 경험을 축적할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 이론과 실무를 겸비한 교수진이 학생들을 교육한다. 학생들의 취업률이 높은 것은 당연한 일이다. 공동기술개발을 통해 매출이 올라간 기업들이 선문대 졸업생을 직접 채용하는 사례도 늘고 있다. -마지막 한마디. 중소기업은 대부분 불량품이 나오기 시작하면 그때서야 해결방법을 찾는다. 평소 공정을 점검하고 문제점이 도출되기 전에 품질개선을 위해 노력하는 것이 중요하다. 중소기업이 원한다면 많은 노하우를 축적한 선문대 센터 연구진이 언제든 달려가겠다. 중소기업이 아산·천안뿐 아니라 우리나라를 부강하게 만들 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다.  ▶문의=041-530-2384 글=장찬우 기자 사진=조영회 기자
