(서울=연합뉴스) 뇌성마비 장애가 있는 한 영국인이 12개월 동안 1천923회에 걸쳐 일자리 찾기에 도전했으나 실패하고 결국 자영업을 하기로 했다고 영국 일간 데일리메일이 23일 보도했다.

   영국 중부에 거주하고 있는 리처드 셰익스피어는 통근 가능한 지역을 기준으로 하루 거의 6건의 이력서 등 각종 서류를 제출하며 구직활동을 했으나 뜻을 이루지 못하고 자신이 직접 사무실을 차려 기업들을 상대로 장애자 문제에 대해 상담해주는 컨설턴트로 나선 것.

   인터넷 은행 에그(Egg)에서 해고된 그는 일자리를 찾기 위해 수백 차례 면접을 보았으며 우편물을 보내는 데만 1천 파운드(180여만원)를 썼다고 밝혔다.

   셰익스피어는 "내가 할 수 있는 거의 모든 직종에 응모했으나 실업의 함정에서 빠져나올 수 없었다"고 회고하고 "일없이 1년 동안 지내면서 의기소침하게 됐으며 적합한 일로 생각했던 것들이 점점 멀어져 갔다"고 말했다.

   그는 어려운 처지에 있으면서도 주택융자금을 갚아야 하기 때문에 최저임금 제안은 거부할 수 밖에 없었다며 단호한 일면을 보이기도 했다.

   한 호텔의 의뢰를 받은 그는 손님으로 가장하여 호텔을 찾아간 경험을 직원들에게 밝히면서 의뢰 호텔로부터 호평을 받는 등 손님이 끊이지 않는 상태에 있다고 한다.
