장미라사는 1956년 삼성그룹 창업주인 이병철 회장의 지시로 만들어졌다. 삼성그룹의 모기업인 제일모직에서 생산한 원단으로 일종의 샘플복을 만들던 곳. `장미라사`라는 상호는 제일모직 사화가 `장미`인 것과 일본식으로 `구라파에서 만든 직물`이라는 뜻의 `라사`를 붙여 만들었다. 제일모직이 본격적인 기성복 사업에 나서던 88년에 `장미라사`는 분사했다. 당시 관리 매니저였던 이영원 사장이 98년부터 인수해 사업을 이끌어오고 있다. 인수 당시는 40만~100만원대 중고가 양복이 주종이었으나 이 사장이 맡으면서 200만~300만원대 초고가 브랜드로 변신했다. 현재 장미라사 직원은 40여 명이며 서울 소공동 본점과 서울 압구정동 갤러리아 내 점포 2곳을 운영 중이다.
장미라사의 명성은 고가 수입 브랜드 사이에서 더욱 빛난다. 서울 압구정동 갤러리아백화점 명품관은 `키톤` `브리오니` 등 한 벌에 1000만원을 호가하는 최고가 수입산 매장이 들어서 있는 곳이다. 거기에 유일하게 입점해 13년간 영업을 해오고 있는 국산 맞춤복이 장미라사다. 단위면적당 매출액을 따지면 수입을 제치고 단연 1위다.
이 사장은 "솔직히 양복 제조 기술로 치자면 자기 나라 옷을 만드는 서구 유럽을 따라갈 순 없죠. 그러나 사람 몸은 제각기 다르고 서구 유럽과 아시아인 특히 한국인만의 고유 체형이 있기 때문에 한국 남성에 맞는 맞춤양복은 우리가 최고로 만든다고 자부합니다"라고 말한다.

요즘 이 사장은 수시로 시장조사를 하기 위해 해외 출장을 간다. 영국 런던의 유명 맞춤복 거리인 셰빌로 내 양복점조차 `장인이 만든 수제 양복`이라는 점 대신 `스타일이 있는 패션 양복`을 내세울 정도로 맞춤시장이 시대 변화에 직면해서다. 그는 "여유가 생길수록 사람들은 맞춤복을 찾게 되지만 패션 흐름을 따라가지 않고서는 경쟁력을 가질 수 없다"면서 "내 몸에 맞는 옷은 기본이고 이제 스타일까지 맞춤해줘야 고객들이 외면하지 않을 것"이라고 강조했다.
이번 가을에 장미라사에서는 염소 앞가슴의 가늘고 긴 털로만 만든 `우스티드(worsted) 캐시미어`를 사용한 100가지 색상의 패션 재킷을 선보인다. 사계절용으로 입을 수 있고 최상의 착용감을 제공한다는 제품이다. 그는 "양복이 태동한 서구 유럽식에 못지않은 기술력과 최고급 원단 그리고 우리만의 사이즈 맞춤 경쟁력과 시대를 좇는 패션성 등을 장점으로 한국식 맞춤양복의 맥을 이어갈 것"이라고 말했다.
