[지디넷코리아]가장 두꺼운 부분이 1.7cm, 얇은 부분은 불과 0.3cm에 불과한 뉴 맥북에어가 의외로 뛰어난 성능을 보여 눈길을 끈다. 초박형 디자인에도 불구하고 고사양의 3D 게임도 거뜬하게 플레이할 수 있는 것으로 확인됐다.

뉴 맥북에어를 실제로 사용해본 결과 성능은 일반 노트북과 비교해도 결코 부족함이 없었다. 시리즈 최초로 출시된 11인치 맥북에어에 2GB 메모리와 128GB SSD 저장장치를 갖춘 제품을 대상으로 몇가지 실험을 진행했다.

우선 뉴 맥북에어를 완전히 껐다가 부팅까지 걸리는 시간을 쟀다. 이미 저장장치에는 60GB 가량의 프로그램이 설치됐고 어느 정도 사용 시간을 거쳤다. 실사용과정에서 부팅시간을 확인하기 위해서다. 다른 OS를 사용하도록 해주는 부트캠프는 설치하지 않았다.

3번의 반복된 실험동안 신형 맥북에어는 완전부팅까지 평균 30초가 소요됐다. 15초가 걸리는 것으로 알려진 것에 비하면 두배에 달하는 시간이지만 일반PC에 비하면 상당히 짧은 시간이다.

부팅 시간에 비해 '인스턴스 온' 기능은 당초 발표대로 1초도 걸리지 않고 곧바로 켜졌다. 화면을 덮고 30분여 동안 가방에 넣고 다니다가 다시 꺼내 열었더니 아이폰 수준의 반응 속도로 제 화면으로 돌아왔다.

그 다음 매킨토시 운영체제에서 구동되는 유일한 온라인게임인 '월드오브워크래프트'를 실행시켰다. 우선 해상도는 최대로 하고(1366x768)하고 그래픽 옵션은 총 5단계 중 2단계에 해당하는 '보통'으로 자동 설정됐다.

테스트 결과 매우 부드러운 움직임과 함께 게임을 플레이하는데 있어 전혀 불편함이 느껴지지 않았다. 사람이 많은 지역에서도 이렇다 할 끊김 현상은 없었다. 그래픽 옵션을 한단계 올려 3단계인 '좋음'으로 해도 마찬가지였다. 다만 4단계인 '높음'으로 설정하자 캐릭터 움직임이 다소 부자연스러워지며 화면이 끊어지는 현상을 보였다.

최신 게임인 '스타크래프트2' 역시 실험을 진행했다. 사양에 맞게 자동으로 설정된 사양으로 배틀넷에서 다른 이용자와 플레이해본 결과 게임 진행에 큰 무리가 없었다. 다만 자동 설정 사양 자체가 낮은 편이어서 특유의 세밀한 그래픽은 어느 정도 포기해야 했다. 또한 윈도우에 비해 조작감이 미세하게 부자연스러운 느낌을 지울 수 없었다. 프로게이머 수준의 컨트롤을 가진 이용자라면 불편함이 느껴질 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 그러나 이는 뉴 맥북에어의 컴퓨터 사양이라기 보다는 다른 운영체제가 가진 특유의 차이점으로 여겨진다.

이밖에 각종 무거운 것으로 알려진 몇몇 동영상 편집 프로그램과 포토샵등을 구동시켰지만 사용상에 불편함은 거의 느껴지지 않았다. 메모리가 부족해 다소 작업이 더딜것으로 예상됐지만 큰 무리가 없는 수준이다.

특히 눈여겨볼만한 부분은 고사양 3D 게임을 한 시간 이상 구동했음에도 불구하고 발열이 크게 없었다는 점이다. 열을 식히기 위한 펜이 아예 없는 까닭에 소음 역시 문제가 없었다.

뉴 맥북에어를 구입했다고 밝힌 한 이용자는 맥 관련 커뮤니티에서 "SSD의 빠른 데이터 읽기 성능과 외장형 그래픽카드 지포스 320m 으로 인해 몇가지 그래픽 옵션만 실행시키지 않는다면 대부분 게임을 구동하기에 무리가 없어 보인다"고 말했다.
