대한민국 벤처는 아동기를 넘어 소년기로 접어들고 있다. 2000년 전후로 IT 벤처 열풍이 거세게 불어 하루에도 수십 개의 회사가 생겨났지만 게임의 법칙에 따라 회사들은 흥망성쇠를 겪었다. 당시 IT 벤처 1세대 대표주자 두 사람이 2010년, 특이한 행보를 보인다. 국내 최대 커뮤니티 전문 사이트 프리챌(www.freechal.com) 창업자로 새로운 벤처 기업 (주)유아짱(www. uajjang.com)을 설립한 전제완 대표, 전자결제 서비스의 선두주자인 이니시스(www. inicis.com)의 창업자로 후배 벤처 창업자들을 돕는 벤처 컨설턴트회사 프라이머 권도균 대표를 만났다. “지금 저는 ‘주간동아’ 김유림 기자와 인터뷰를 하고 있습니다. 왜 이렇게 쑥스러워하시는지….” 인터뷰 막바지. 갑작스레 그가 스마트폰을 꺼내 동영상을 찍었다. 어리바리하는 사이 그는 터치 몇 번으로 영상을 트위터, 블로그, 자신의 동영상 채널인 짱라이브(www.jjanglive. com) 등에 바로 전송했다. 얼마 안 돼 리플이 달렸고 리트윗(RT), 퍼가기 등이 이루어지고 있었다. “이제는 텍스트, 사진이 아닌 영상으로 소통하는 소셜 영상 미디어 시대입니다. 매스미디어(mass media)가 소화하지 못하는 부분을 개인이 스마트폰으로 찍어 유포하는 거죠.” 새로운 벤처 세워 또다른 도전 그는 2009년 ‘인터넷판 홈쇼핑’이라 설명할 수 있는 유아짱을 설립했다. 짱라이브를 통해 제품을 동영상으로 보여주고 전자상거래를 유도하는 오픈마켓이다. 2010년 8월 초에 열어 보름 만에 가입자가 1만 명을 돌파했다. 내년에 영어 등 20개 언어로 번역서비스를 제공하고 일본, 중국 등에도 플랫폼을 만들 예정. 전 대표는 한때 NHN, 다음커뮤니케이션에 이어 포털 점유율 3위를 차지하던 프리챌의 창업자지만 2002년 횡령·배임 혐의로 구속돼 2년형을 살면서 프리챌을 떠났다. “후발주자로서 한계가 분명했는데도 포털 전쟁에 뛰어드니 뒤처질 수밖에 없었죠. 회사가 위기를 겪자 캐피털과 풋옵션 계약이 문제가 됐고, 대표이사가 유한책임을 지는 구조 때문에 제가 구속까지 된 거죠.” 2004년 말 사회에 돌아왔으나 250억 원의 빚 때문에 재기는 불가능해 보였다. ‘자유(free)와 도전(challenge)’이란 가치를 앞세워 직접 만든 프리챌 역시 새롬기술(현 솔본)의 손에 넘어갔다. 프리챌은 한동안 P2P 시스템인 파일구리(www.fileguri.com) 등을 통해 깜짝 매출을 올렸으나 현재는 점유율이 10위권 밖이다. “시집간 자식이 잘 살면 모르겠는데 고전하니 마음이 어땠겠어요.” 복역 후 사업 컨설턴트로 활동했지만 버는 족족 이자로 나가 생활이 불가능했다. 결국 2008년 파산신청을 했다. 빈손으로 6개월간 머리를 싸매고 고민해 유아짱을 만들었다. 프리챌 원년 멤버였던 윤태중 전무(현 유아짱 COO·업무최고책임자), 장규오 상무(현 CTO·최고기술경영자) 등도 함께했다. 그는 “더 이상 한국은 인터넷 강국이 아니다. 소프트웨어로 승부해야 한다”고 주장했다. “이제 누가 한국을 인터넷 강국이라고 합니까? 유·무선 시장은 미국이 장악했습니다. 국내 포털의 책임이 커요. 단기 순이익만 몇천억 원이 넘지만 현실에 안주해 기술 개발을 안 하고, 해외에서도 번번한 성공 모델을 못 만들고 있잖아요.” 그는 “만약 스티브 잡스가 한국에서 태어났으면 애플은 없었을 것”이라며 실패를 겪은 사람에게 기회 주는 데 인색한 환경을 비판했다. 실패 경험을 바탕으로 더 잘할 수 있는 사람을 키워주지 않는다는 것. 하지만 척박한 환경에도 전씨를 비롯해 노상범(전 홍익인터넷 대표) 씨, 이동형(싸이월드 창업자) 씨 등 벤처 1세대가 속속 복귀하고 있다. “10년 전에는 아이디어만으로 벤처를 할 수 있었지만 이제는 경험이 필요합니다. 저를 포함한 벤처 1세대는 경험이 많은 데다 아직 젊지요. 게다가 무선인터넷 시장이라는 새로운 기회가 주어졌죠. 우리는 모두 한국형 스티브 잡스가 될 거예요.” (계속) |
