   시로 우가르테 범미주보건기구(PAHO) 지역고문은 "앞으로 6∼12개월간 20만명의 콜레라 환자가 발생할 것으로 추정하고 있다"며 "(4∼5%의) 치사율이 지속된다면 1만명의 사망자가 나올 수 있다"고 밝혔다고 17일 AFP통신이 전했다.

   PAHO의 전망은 최악의 시나리오를 상정한 것이기는 하나 올 1월 지진 참사로 25만명 이상이 목숨을 잃은 아이티에 또 한 번의 재앙이 예고된 셈이다.

   보건 당국자들은 수도 포르토프랭스에 있는 지진 이재민 캠프촌에서 아직까지 대규모 발병은 확인되지 않았지만, 위생이 불결한 캠프촌에 콜레라가 번질 경우 '산불'처럼 확산할 것으로 우려하고 있다.
