투자자 수는 총 14명이다. 현재까지 알려진 투자자는 김정주 넥슨 회장, 김택진 엔씨소프트 대표, 나성균 네오위즈 대표, 박성찬 다날 대표, 천양현 전 NHN재팬 대표, 남궁훈 CJ인터넷 대표 등이다. 이들은 카카오톡의 대주주이자 이사회 의장인 김범수 NHN 창업자와 돈독한 친분을 자랑하는 것으로 알려졌다. 

‘카카오톡’은 스마트폰용 무료 메신저 애플리케이션(이하 앱)으로 국내 이용자만 600만명을 넘어섰다. 해외 인기도 상당하다. 최근에는 쿠웨이트, 사우디아라비아 등 중동 4개국에서 인기 무료앱 1위에 올랐으며, 미국과 일본 시장에 진출한 상태다.

또 다른 업계 관계자는 “인맥 네트워크, 게임, 결제 등이 결합해 성공한 사례가 페이스북”이라며 “IT 업계 빅뱅과 다름없는 상황이 올 수도 있다”고 말했다. 

카카오는 이들로부터 투자받은 53억원을 서비스 안정화, 개인정보 보안 강화 등에 사용할 예정이다.
