지난해 11월 하버드 법대에서 여성으로는 첫 아시아계 종신교수가 된 석지영(37.미국명 지니석) 씨가 13일 미주한인의 날을 맞아 `자랑스러운 한인상'을 받았다.

   석 교수는 서남표(74) 한국과학기술원(KAIST) 총장과 박윤식(71) 조지워싱턴대 교수와 함께 나란히 한미경제연구소(KEI)가 선정한 수상자 반열에 올랐다.

   상패 수여식은 지난 1903년 첫 한국 이민자들이 미국땅을 밟은 날을 기념해 지정된 미주한인의 날인 이날 워싱턴 D.C 윌러드 인터컨티넨탈호텔에서 열렸다.

   30대의 젊은 나이로 세계적인 명문 하버드 법대의 종신교수직에 오른 성공스토리때문에 특히 많은 참석자들의 박수를 받았고, 자신을 강하게 채찍질해온 그의 성장과정은 차세대 젊은이들에게 많은 울림을 던졌다.

   지난 1979년 6살 때 뉴욕 퀸즈로 부모를 따라 이민한 석 교수는 어릴 적 완전히 새롭고 낯선 환경에 던져지고 적응했던 경험이 삶을 발전시켜온 큰 원동력이었다고 회고했다.

   그는 "원래 쉬지않고 혼자서 재잘거리는 아이였지만, 미국 초등학교에 입학하고 전혀 영어를 못해 한마디 말도 할 수 없게됐고, 또 완전히 새 세상에 적응하기 위해 방황하고 소외감을 느꼈던 경험은 나의 기억속에 아이로서 고통스러운 것이었다"고 말했다.

   하지만 "매일매일 겪고 또 극복해가는 이러한 경험은 나에게 삶을 헤쳐가고 사물을 관찰할 수 있는 능력을 제공했고, 단지 어울리는 것만이 아니라 상황을 더 낫게 만들어가는 힘도 주었던 것 같다"고 얘기했다.

   퀸즈의 첫 초등학교 친구들은 요르단, 이스라엘, 멕시코, 일본, 체코, 인도, 중국 등 전세계로부터 온 이민자들이 대부분이었다며 "이들 이민자들의 공통점은 전쟁, 망명, 추방, 재건, 생존 등에서 비롯되거나 미국에서의 새로운 미래를 찾기 위한 것이었다"고 유년기의 환경이 주요한 성장 배경이었다고 기억했다.

   특히 석 교수는 오늘의 자신이 있기까지에는 어머니가 절대적 영향을 미쳤다고 강조했다.

   어릴 적 어머니가 매일같이 자신과 여동생을 동네 도서관으로 데리고 갔다는 석 교수는 "엄마로부터 책을 찾는 방법을 배우고 스스로 보고싶은 책을 찾아다니며 혼자서 은밀한 발견을 하는 즐거움을 누렸고, 자유를 추구하는 힘을 키웠던 것 같다"며 법학자로서의 길을 걷게 된 성장과정을 전적으로 어머니의 영향으로 돌렸다.

   어머니로부터 "책을 읽어라"는 얘기를 수도 없이 들으며 자랐고 한 번에 10권의 책을 읽기도 했다는 그는 "책을 읽는 게 즐겁다는 것을 어릴 적에 깨달았고, 나에게 독서는 비밀스러운 세계를 찾아가는 과정이었다"며 말했다.

   그는 범죄, 가족법에 관한 저서와 논문으로 평가를 받아 하버드 법대 종신교수로 발탁됐다. 향후 목표에 대해서는 "최고의 학자, 최고의 선생이 되고 싶다"며 "미래에 영향력을 미칠 학생들을 책임감 있게 가르치는 것이 내가 할 일"이라고 말했다.

   예일대를 졸업하고 옥스퍼드대에서 불문학 박사학위를 딴 후 하버드 법대를 졸업한 석 교수는 젊은이들에게 "자신보다 앞서 살아간 사람들 중에서 멘토를 만드는 것이 그보다 더 중요한 사람이 될 수 있는 열쇠"라고 조언했다.

   이날 자랑스러운 한인상 시상식에는 한덕수 주미대사를 비롯한 주요 인사들이 나와 축하했고, 한나라당 전재희 이성헌 차명진 윤상현 조해진 현기환 유일호, 창조한국당 이용경, 미래희망연대 윤상일 의원도 KEI의 초청을 받아 참석했다.
