[60th Anniv] 'Korea Times to play key role in G20 Seoul Summit'

President Lee Myung-bak President congratulates newspaper on 60th anniversary The following is a congratulatory message from President Lee Myung-bak on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of The Korea Times that falls on Monday. — ED. I join all Koreans in celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of The Korea Times. Founded on Nov. 1, 1950, The Korea Times published its first edition at the height of the Korean War to report what was happening in Korea for the United Nations forces and the rest of the world. Since then, the paper has contributed to informing the international community about various aspects of Korea. A copy of President Lee Myung-bak’s congratulatory message to The Korea Times, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary, Monday / Korea Times for more than a half century. During the 1988 Seoul Olympics, it produced the official daily of the Games, The Seoul Olympian. It also served as the official paper for other major international events held in Korea, including the APEC and ASEM summits. Lately, the paper has endeavored to promote the brand image of Korea by running a series of feature stories that shed light on the nation’s history and culture. Around the time of the founding of The Korea Times 60 years ago, the Republic of Korea was one of the most impoverished countries in the world. Last year, however, Korea joined the OECD Development Assistance Committee. In 10 days, the nation will play host to the G20 Seoul Summit convened to deal with matters concerning the global economic recovery and sustainable growth. As the chair nation of the G20 Seoul Summit, Korea is entrusted with the crucial responsibility of steering global coordination and building a consensus on major international issues. And I trust that The Korea Times will play a very important role in helping the Seoul Summit achieve great success. Once more, I offer heartfelt congratulations to President Park Moo-jong and the staff of the paper as well as the loyal readers of the outstanding paper, The Korea Times, on its 60th birthday.
