Baby bats orphaned by flood all too cute for netizens

The worst floods in a century have swept northeastern Australia, where flash floods just Monday added another five to the death toll. The State of Queensland has been affected by floods since October last year. By New Year’s Eve, floodwaters covered an area equal to the size of France and Germany, or the Korean Peninsula more than four times over. The wildlife has also taken toll, with 130 orphaned bats having been rescued in past weeks, reported the Daily Mail Jan. 7. They are being nursed, as pictured, at the Australian Bat Clinic and Wildlife Trauma Center. Director Trish Wimberley says that bats as young as four-week-old have been discovered, not having from cave ceilings, but on the ground instead, covered in maggots. “They're coming down to feed on the ground. That makes them vulnerable. It's not a natural occurrence and shows there is trouble in the environment. “Bats are a barometer to what is going on in the environment. They're our canaries down the coal mine,” said Wimberley, indicating that it is more than the floods which are awry. Netizens have responded warmly to the images of the baby bats, observing that it is not only humans who have been hurt by the floods. Many have commented that the baby bats are ‘cute.’ The surviving bats will be bottle-fed and kept suspended either from clotheslines or in incubators for another four weeks before they are ready to fly again. Since Nov. 2010, 26 Queenslanders have died as a result of the floods and this figure is expected to rise. 홍수로부터 구조된 아기박쥐들…네티즌 “너무 귀여워”  100년만에 사상 최악의 홍수로 몸살을 앓은 호주에서 130마리의 아기 박쥐들이 구조됐다고 영국 <데일리 메일>이 7일 보도했다. 구조된 박쥐들은 생후 4주된 아기 박쥐들로 호주 골드코스트시의 한 해안에서 발견됐다. 구조한 이들은 호주 <야생박쥐 조절센터>의 트리시 윔벌리와 그녀의 조수다. 트리시 일행은 최근 몇 주간 해안에 위치한 몇몇 박쥐 동굴에 방문했다. 발견 당시 박쥐들은 동굴 천정이 아닌, 구더기와 파리 알로 덮인 땅에 있었던 것으로 전해졌다. 트리시는 “박쥐들이 먹이를 찾아 땅으로 내려온 걸로 봐서 그들은 무척 약한 상태”라고 말했다. 또 “(박쥐들은) 자연적으로는 그렇게 행동하지 않는다”며 “이는 환경에 문제가 생겼음을 보여준다. 박쥐들은 환경에 무슨 일이 발생하는지 알려주는 바로미터와 같다”고 설명했다. 아기 박쥐들의 사진이 공개되자 네티즌들은 “자연재해로 피해입는 건 사람들 뿐만이 아니구나” “박쥐가 저렇게 귀여운 줄 몰랐다. 빨리 회복해서 자연으로 돌아나길” 등의 반응을 보였다. 이번에 구해진 박쥐들은 날아오를 준비가 될때가지 4주간 치료용 인큐베이터 속에서 키워질 예정이다. 년 11월 따라 홍수로 인해 호주 퀸즈랜드 주에는 26 명이 사망했으며 이 수는 앞으로 증가할 것으로 예측되고 있다.
