(워싱턴 AFP.AP=연합뉴스) 미국 우주산업체가 내년 임무가 종료되는 미 항공우주국(NASA)의 우주왕복선을 대체하기 위해 개발 중인 우주선이 지구궤도에 진입하는 시험 비행을 성공적으로 마치고 8일(현지시각) 무사 귀환했다.

   스페이스익스플로레이션테크놀러지스(SpaceX, 이하 스페이스엑스)는 이날 자체 개발한 로켓 팔컨9을 이용해 발사한 우주선 '드래건(Dragon)'이 궤도 진입에 성공했으며 태평양으로 무사히 귀환했다고 밝혔다.

   민간 우주선이 발사와 귀환까지 모두 성공하기는 처음이다.

   플로리다의 케네디 우주센터에서 이날 10시43분(1543 GMT)에 발사된 드래건은 약 10분 후 궤도에 진입했으며 지구 주위를 2바퀴 회전한 후 대기권으로 재진입, 12시4분(1904 GMT)에 태평양에 무사히 착수했다.

   이번 시험 비행의 목적은 우주선의 로켓 분리능력과 궤도 순항 여부, 신호 전송, 명령 수신, 무사 귀환 등을 점검하기 위한 것이다.

   스페이스엑스는 이날 트위터에 "목표 지점에 정확히 착수. 임무 성공!"이라는 글을 올렸으며 NASA도 성공 직후 축하인사를 전했다.

   드래건에는 회사 직원들의 배지나 물건, 기념품 수천점이 실렸다. 이번 비행에는 사람이 타지 않았지만 드래건 기내에는 7명을 태우고 화물을 실을 수 있는 공간이 있어 가까운 장래에 민간 우주비행이 실현될 가능성이 한층 커졌다.

   팔컨9 로켓은 NASA의 '상업 궤도 운송 서비스(Commercial Orbital Transportation Services)' 프로그램의 첫 성과물이다.

   회사는 다음 단계로 국제우주정거장(ISS)의 주위를 함께 비행하는 능력을 테스트하게 된다. 승무원과 화물을 태운 비행은 이르면 내년에 실시할 계획이다.

   회사는 그러나 과도한 낙관을 경계하며 모든 시험이 일정대로 진행될 확률은 약 70% 정도라고 내다봤다.
