지난 서울국제도서전에 독립부스로 참여했을 때 현장에서 많은 중소규모 출판사 관계자들의 이북에 대한 관심을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 기존의 흑백 e-Ink 뷰어의 콘텐츠와 비교해 아이패드에서 시연한 멀티미디어 요소가 가미된 잡지에 대한 반응은 기대 이상으로 뜨거웠다. 그러나 크든 작든 관계없이 출판사들이 이북에 대한 높은 관심에 비해 디지털 퍼블리싱 사업 전개에 대해서는 불안감을 갖고 있다는 것을 느꼈다. 이는 관련 정보에 대한 부족이나 기존 유통사업자 간의 신뢰 부족에서 기인한 것이라고 막연히 결론지을 이슈는 아니라고 본다.

개인적인 소견으로는 웹과 소셜미디어 시대인 지금 콘텐츠와 미디어에 대한 새로운 인식이 필요하다고 본다. 미디어와 콘텐츠 간의 경계가 사라지고 있으며, 또한 각각 인쇄물의 텍스트나 음악, 영상물로 대표되었던 콘텐츠의 범위가 확장되었다고 본다. 이렇듯 엔터테인먼트 요소가 가미된 디지털 콘텐츠에 대한 소비자들의 높은 열망과 변화된 출판 비즈니스 환경에 살아남으려면, 기존 콘텐츠(종이책을 통한 지식, 정보 전달)에 대한 우리의 인식도 진화하여 이 모든 것들을 융합한 새로운 형태의 콘텐츠에 대해 고민하고 과감히 도전해야 한다.

DRM(Digital Rights Management)이란 저작권 이용자가 승인하지 않은 방식으로 디지털 콘텐츠가 이용 또는 배포되지 않도록 기술적 능력을 제한시키므로 디지털 콘텐츠의 유료화에 없어서는 안되는 요소다.

따라서 DRM 표준화에 대한 논의는 저작권 소유자, 업계, 소비자 모두를 위한 솔루션이라는 인식 하에 적정한 디지털 콘텐츠 보호 기능과 더불어 최대한의 호환성을 고려하며 소비자의 개인정보를 보장하는 방향에서 진행되어야 할 것이다.

Wired가 아이패드용 앱 잡지로 선보인 후 사람들의 눈높이가 거기에 맞춰졌다. 실제로 그런 결과물을 만드는 건 어떤 일인가?

근래까지의 이북은 단순히 종이에 있는 텍스트와 이미지 등을 컴퓨터의 문서 파일로 저장하는 것에 지나지 않았다면, 이제 이북은 사용자와 상호작용하는 문서로 진화하고 있다. 이북 독자가 책을 보며 밑줄을 긋고 북마크하고 단어를 찾고 그림을 그리고 노래를 배우고 색을 칠하고 소리를 듣는 것이 가능한 것이다. 또한 콘텐츠 내의 동영상을 통해 직관적인 정보 입수와 가상 체험, 제품이나 서비스의 구매도 가능하다.

Wired의 경우 앱이 4.99달러(인쇄판은 5달러)나 하는 데도 불구하고 하루만에 2만4,000 다운로드를 기록(5월 25일)하였다. 타 앱에 비해 높은 판매 기록을 보인 이유는 최초로 3차원 이미지와 동영상을 구현한 앱북이었기 때문일 것이다. 아마 전 세계의 모든 출판 관계자가 하나씩은 구입하지 않았을까 생각한다. 하지만 앞서 언급했듯이 Wired같은 앱북은 프로그래머는 물론 멀티미디어 소스 생성자가 필요하므로 수천만원이 소요되는 프로젝트라고 할 수 있다.

인지도가 높은 해외 잡지인 Wired 외에도 다양한 분야의 잡지가 현재 아이패드용으로 제작되어 판매되고 있거나 기획 중에 있다. 인큐브테크도 국내 태블릿PC의 도입에 대비해 국내 출판사와 함께 앱북 제작을 하고 있으며 아동용 콘텐츠에 대한 의뢰가 쇄도해 대응에 분주한 실정이다. 특히 태블릿PC와 휴대폰에 앱으로 제작되는 콘텐츠의 경우 앞서 말한 바와 같이 종이책에서는 구현이 절대 불가능했던 멀티레이어드 기능과 엔터테인먼트적인 요소들을 편집자가 원하는 의도를 반영하여 가미할 수 있기 때문에 그러한 기술을 가지고 있는 솔루션 업체와 편집자와의 지속적인 커뮤니케이션이 절대적으로 요구된다.

최근 무상으로 이북 생성 서비스를 지원하고 로열티 개념으로 수익을 나누겠다는 회사(이북 솔루션 업체나 앱북 솔루션 업체 등)들이 등장하고 있다.

미국의 경우 이북 출간이 활성화되면서 제작, 출판, 유통을 돕는 업체들이 점차 늘어나는 추세다. 온라인 서점인 아마존도 ‘아마존 디지털 텍스트 플랫폼’을 운영하며 1인 출간을 돕고 있다.

이는 이북 시장의 달라진 문화를 반영하고 있다고 판단된다. 기존의 종이책은 일단 종이와 인쇄를 통해 물리적인 책이 제작되어야만 했다. 즉 책이 1권 제작될 때마다 기본적인 재료비가 들어가는 것이다. 이북에서 이 부분은 디지털 기술로(파일 변환, 저장, 보안, DRM 등) 대체된다. 종이책의 재료비를 이북 서비스의 수익 분배 비용으로 보면 될 것이다.

이제는 원고를 들고 출판사를 찾아가 출간이 가능한지의 여부와 인쇄 배분을 신경쓰지 않아도 되는 시대가 왔다. 개인이 쓴 글을 직접 편집해 온라인에 올리기만 하면 책으로 출간되는 출판문화가 도래되었다는 것을 의미한다. 기존 출판사들도 이북을 통해 출판 비용을 조절할 수 있을 것이다.

콘텐츠만 가진 일반인도 이북 시장에 대한 희망이 생겼다는 말이기도 하다. 그런 사람들은 다른 차원의 정보와 준비가 필요한가?

솔루션 업체 및 이북 서비스 업체들이 이북 시장의 활성화를 불러일으킬 것이라 기대되며, 이에 따라 출판사를 거치지 않고 직접 이북을 출시하거나 대행업체에 의뢰하여 이북을 제작하는 사례가 외국에서부터 나타나고 있다.

이북 시장에 대한 대비 방법은 일반인이나 업체나 크게 다르지 않다. 우선 어떠한 포맷의 이북 변환을 원하는지, 즉 단순 텍스트와 이미지만의 변환인지, 아니면 인터렉티브 기능을 가미하고 싶은지 등 이북화하였을 때 본인의 콘텐츠가 어떻게 디스플레이되길 바라는지 구체적인 기획이 필요하다. 또한 단말기별로 구현 가능한 기술들이 제한되어 있기 때문에 이점 또한 고려의 대상이다.

- 미국국립표준기술연구소(National Technical Information Service, NTIS) : 책을 보는 것과 유사한 형태로 콘텐츠를 표시하는 단말 시스템 그 자체(디바이스 하드웨어)를 의미함.

- OeBF(Open eBook Forum, IDPF의 전신) : 문자 저작물이 포함되어 디지털 형태로 출판되고 열람되는 콘텐츠로서 하나 이상의 고유한 식별자, 메타 데이터, 콘텐츠 부문으로 구성된 것 또는 그것을 읽기 위해 개발된 하드웨어 디바이스 그 자체를 의미함. 이북을 포괄적으로 정의했다고 할 수 있음.

- 한국전자출판협회(KEPA) : 도서로 간행되었거나 또는 도서로 간행될 수 있는 저작물의 내용이 디지털 데이터로 전자적 기록매체나 저장장치에 수록되고 컴퓨터 또는 휴대용 단말기를 통해 그 내용을 보고 들을 수 있는 것, 즉 콘텐츠를 지칭함.

통상적으로 이북이란 저작자의 메시지를 전달자에 의해 디지털 형태로 가공(편집, 레이아웃, 디지털로 변환된 자료)하여 전자적 저장매체(CD-ROM, CD-I, DVD)에 담거나 또는 이북 파일의 형태를 유무선 통신망을 이용하여 전송하거나 온라인으로 유통되어 이북 전용 뷰어, 전용 소프트웨어 또는 전자단말기를 통하여 볼 수 있는 새로운 디지털 출판 형태를 말한다.

이펍(electronic publication)

이북의 국제표준을 정하는 국제디지털출판포럼(International Digital Publishing Forum)에서 2007년 9월 이전에 있던 오픈 이북 표준을 대체하기 위해 공식 표준으로 채택한 새로운 이북 파일 포맷이다. 이펍은 다양한 디바이스 크기에 따라 디스플레이가 자동으로 조절되는 것이 가장 큰 특징.

- 프레임오프(frame-off) 디자인 구조 : 특정한 레이아웃 틀(화면 크기)를 가지지 않는 프레임 오프 디자인 구조.

- 페이지 크기 : 사용자가 적용하는 크기 또는 단말기별 크기에 따라 레이아웃이 유동적으로 변경

- 페이지 수 : 페이지 크기에 따라 변경

- 여백 : 뷰어의 여백에 따라 적용

- 서체 적용 : CSS의 스타일 기준으로 각 환경의 시스템에서 지원하는 서체로 자동 변경되어 디스플레이됨.

- 시스템에 서체가 없는 경우, CSS에서 정의된 서체로

- 시스템에 서체가 있는 경우, 적용된 서체로

- 서체 속성 지원 : 인쇄물에 사용된 본래의 서체 외에 이북용으로 편집자가 원하는 서체의 크기, 스타일, 정렬 기준으로 변경 가능. 매체별 가독성을 고려하여 서체 변경 가능.

- 다양한 단말기 지원 : 단일 표준하에 생산하게 되어 사용자들은 자신의 이북을 여러 단말기를 통해 읽을 수 있으며, 하드웨어에 대한 지원이 끊어져도 기존에 소장한 콘텐츠를 그대로 이용할 수 있음.

앱북(AppBook)

이북이 단독 애플리케이션으로 제작된 형태를 일컫는다. 다양한 멀티 인터렉티브 기능을 구현하고자 하는 잡지나 아동용 콘텐츠의 경우 고려할 수 있을텐데, 이북 뷰어에서 제공할 수 있는 인터렉티브 기능(페이지 넘김, 확대 및 축소 등)은 제한이 있기 때문이다. 단 이런 경우 새로운 기획과 멀티미디어 콘텐츠, 개발자의 전폭적 참여가 필요하므로 비용 부담이 커진다.
