Indians agree to 1-year $3.9 mil. contract with Choo Shin-soo

CLEVELAND — One year, for now, must do. But the Cleveland Indians hope to sign outfielder Choo Shin-soo for much longer. The club agreed to a $3.975-million, one-year contract with their best all-around player on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration with Choo and extending their streak of staying out of arbitration hearings to 20 years. The Indians haven't gone to a hearing with any players since Jerry Browne and Gregg Swindell in 1991. Cleveland also reached one-year deals with closer Chris Perez ($2.225 million) and set-up man Rafael Perez ($1.33 million) before the 1 p.m. deadline to exchange salary figures with any unsigned arbitration-eligible players. On Monday, the team finalized terms with shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera ($2.025 million). Choo's contract situation promised to be a challenge for new general manager Chris Antonetti, who had to negotiate with super agent Scott Boras. But the sides, who have had discussions on a long-term contract for Choo, were able to reach the one-year pact. Antonetti did not provide any specifics about his talks with Boras. However, Antonetti indicated the sides will continue to work on a multi-year deal for the 28-year-old Choo, who batted .300 with 22 homers, 22 steals and 90 RBIs last season — all for $461,100. He was one of only three major leaguers to hit .300 with 20 homers and 20 steals. "I don't view negotiations as being closed at this point," Antonetti said. One of baseball's most underrated players, Choo was recently granted an exemption from serving in the South Korean military after helping his country win a gold medal at the Asian Games. Now, Choo and the Indians will get to work on improving their 69-93 mark from last season. And they'll do so with Chris Perez, who will begin the season with a fatter paycheque and a full-time job. The right-hander opened last season in a set-up role, but was promoted to closer after Kerry Wood was traded to the New York Yankees in July. Perez flourished with the game on the line, finishing with 23 saves in 27 tries. His 1.71 earned-run average was second lowest among AL relievers. Perez converted 18 of his final 19 chances, including 10 straight to end the season. Rafael Perez bounced back from an atrocious 2009 by going 6-1 with a 3.25 ERA in a team-high 70 games. AP통신은 19일(이하 한국시간) 추신수가 클리블랜드 구단과 1년간 연봉 397만5000달러(약 44억원)에 재계약했다고 전했다. 이번에 계약한 연봉 액수는 지난 해 받았던 46만1100달러보다 8배 이상 오른 금액이다. 역대 메이저리그에서 활약했던 한국 선수 가운데서도 박찬호(2006년 1550만5142달러), 김병현(2005년 657만5000달러)에 이어 역대 세 번째로 높은 연봉액을 기록하게 됐다. 하지만 액수만 놓고 보면 당초 기대보다는 다소 못미치는 것으로 보인다. 추신수는 지난 해 타율 3할에 22홈런 22도루 90타점을 기록하면서 최고의 활약을 펼쳤다. 클리블랜드 구단 역사상 2년 연속 3할-20홈런-20도루를 기록한 선수는 추신수가 처음이었다. 특히 오프시즌에 추신수와 비슷한 수준의 선수들은 소속팀과 평균 연봉 1000만 달러에 육박하느 장기계약을 맺으면서 추신수도 대박계약에 대한 기대감을 높였다. 하지만 결과는 다년계약이 아닌 1년 계약이었다. 구단의 재정상황 등 여러가지 상황을 감안해 어설픈 다년계약 보다는 매년 연봉 조정 신청을 통해 몸값을 올린 뒤 2013년 시즌 뒤 FA 대박을 노리는 것이 낫다고 판단한 것으로 보인다. 추신수의 에이전트인 스콧 보라스도 현지언론과의 인터뷰에서 "다년계약은 전혀 고려하지 않고 있다"고 밝힌 바 있다. 어쨌든 추신수 입장에선 이번 계약을 통해 앞으로 이뤄낼 초대형 계약의 발판을 마련했다고 볼 수 있다. 지난 시즌과 같은 활약상이 계속 이어진다면 추신수의 몸값은 FA 자격을 얻기 전에도 수직상승할 것이 불을 보듯 뻔하다. 한편, 클리블랜드는 추신수와 함께 연봉 조정 신청을 한 마무리 투수 크리스 페레스와 연봉 222만5000달러, 좌완 셋업맨 라파엘 페레스와 연봉 133만 달러 조건으로 1년 재계약에 합의했다. 이에 앞서 18일에는 유격수 아스드루발 카브레라와도 연봉 202만5000달러에 1년 계약을 한 바 있다. 이로써 클리블랜드는 연봉 재계약 대상 선수들과의 계약을 모두 마쳤다. 1991년 이후 연봉조정위원회 청문회를 치른 적이 없는 클리블랜드는 올시즌 역시 연봉 중재 없이 협상을 마감했다.
