강 회장이 기적처럼 일군 STX그룹이 오는 2일로 창립 10주년을 맞는다. 강 회장은 지난달 29일 중국 다롄에 위치한 'STX 다롄 조선해양 종합생산기지'로 세계각국의 손님 1000여 명을 초청, 성대한 기념행사를 열고 글로벌 기업으로 우뚝 성장한 STX의 위용을 과시했다.



강 회장은 선박엔진을 만들던 회사를 10년 새 △조선·기계 △해운·무역 △플랜트·건설 △에너지 등 4개 부문에 걸친 사업 포트폴리오를 갖춘 기업그룹으로 변모시켰다. 2001년 출범 당시 2605억원에 불과했던 매출은 지난해 26조원으로, 4391억원이던 자산은 32조원으로 100배 가까이 성장했다. 20대 그룹을 통틀어 현재 오너가 기업을 일으킨 경우는 강 회장과 롯데 신격호 총괄회장, 동부 김준기 회장 셋뿐이다.



STX의 이같은 성공은 강 회장의 '세계화' 전략에서 비롯됐다. 그는 2001년 5월 쌍용중공업 사명을 '주식회사 STX'로 변경하고 회사를 창립할 당시부터 세계화 전략을 가슴에 품고 있었다. 퇴출 위기에 내몰렸던 회사를 갓 인수한 상황이라 공개적으로 얘기하진 않았지만 임직원들에겐 늘 "그룹의 미래는 국내가 아닌 해외에 있다. 좁은 국내시장에서 다투지 말고 광활한 해외시장을 잡아야 한다"고 강조했다.



강 회장은 이후 STX 비전을 '월드 베스트 STX'로 삼고, 차근차근 세계화 전략에 시동을 걸기 시작했다. 그가 염두에 둔 세계화 전략의 열쇠는 바로 인수·합병(M & A)이었다.



출범 5개월 만에 현재 대동조선(현 STX조선해양)을 인수한데 이어, 이듬해 산단에너지(현 STX에너지)를 인수했다. 2년 뒤인 2004년 벌크선 운송업체였던 범양상선(현 STX팬오션) 인수까지 성공하며 '조선-에너지-해운'으로 이어지는 3대 핵심 사업부문을 구축하는데 성공했다.



강 회장은 이에 대해 "조선, 해운, 에너지는 밀접한 관계가 있다. 에너지 분야에서 큰 물동량이 나오기 때문이다. 시너지 효과를 창출할 여지가 많다"고 설명했다. 그의 판단은 정확했다. 출범 5년 만인 2006년 STX그룹 매출은 8조 원을 넘었고, STX조선은 세계 조선업계 6위 회사로 성장했다.



2007년 찾아온 조선·해운 활황기는 STX의 이같은 성장세에 힘을 더했다. STX그룹은 그해 매출 12조6200억원, 자산 규모 12조4000억원으로 나란히 12조원을 돌파했고, 강 회장은 이같은 폭발적인 성장세를 기반으로 2007년 10월 세계 최대 크루즈선 건조업체인 아커야즈(현 STX유럽) 인수를 성사시키며 국내 조선사에 한 획을 그었다.



STX의 아커야즈 인수는 국내 조선업계 사상 최대 규모의 M & A였을 뿐 아니라, 조선업계 후발주자인 STX가 펼치는 역전 드라마의 서곡이기도 했다. 실제로 STX조선은 아커야즈 인수로 전세계 조선업체 중 유일하게 △일반상선 △여객선 △해양플랜트 △방산용 군함 등 조선 4개 분야 전 선종을 모두 생산할 수 있는 역량을 갖추게 됐다.



지난해 STX그룹 매출(26조원)의 90%는 해외에서 나왔다. 강 회장이 그토록 염원했던 '세계화'의 꿈은 일단 이뤄진 셈이다. 그는 10주년 기념사를 통해 "조선·해운에 편중된 사업 포트폴리오의 다변화하는 한편, 각 사업부문별 글로벌 탑 기업으로 성장해야 한다"고 말했다. 이제 남은 과제는 강 회장 본인이 지적한 대로다.
