초등학교 5학년이던 지난 1998년 부모를 따라 인도네시아로 이주한 장상아(23.여) 양이 인도네시아 국립 브라위자야대학 법학과를 최고 성적으로 졸업, 현지 교민사회에서 화제가 되고 있다.
장 양은 지난 1958년 개교한 이 대학에 처음이자 유일한 한국인 학생으로 입학해 각고의 노력 끝에 지난 22일 열린 졸업식에서 수석 졸업자의 자격으로 법학과를 대표해 연설을 하는 영광을 누렸다.
동부 자바 말랑시에 위치한 브라위자야대는 인도네시아에서 법학과로 유명한 학교로 1천500여명의 교수와 3만9천여명의 학생이 재학중이다.
장 양은 1일 연합뉴스와의 전화통화에서 "외국인으로 살아가면서 억울한 일을 직.간접적으로 경험하다보니 이 나라의 법을 정확하게 알 필요가 있다는 생각에 고 3 때 법학 방면에 인기가 있는 이 학교를 택했다"고 밝혔다.
그는 "인도네시아에서 수석졸업을 뜻하는 특별한 단어는 없다"면서 "학과 성적과 졸업 논문을 포함한 전체 점수(GPA)가 3.51 (4.00 만점) 이상이면 '쿰 라우데(우등 졸업생)' 호칭을 얻고, 쿰 라우데 획득 학생 중 최고 점수 취득자가 수석 졸업의 영예를 안게 돼 있다"고 설명했다.
장 양은 대학 입학 이후 학업 성적은 물론 졸업 논문에서도 항상 최우등 자리를 놓치지 않았다. 이 때문에 교수진이나 동료 학생들도 장 양의 수석 졸업을 당연시하면서 축하를 아끼지 않았다.
그는 "많은 분들이 이슬람 문화 속에서 살아가기 힘들겠다고 걱정하기도 하는데 교수와 동급생들 모두 세심하게 배려하고 잘 도와줘 행복한 대학생활을 보낼 수 있었다"고 말했다.
장 양은 지난해 가을 졸업을 앞두고 제일제당 인도네시아 법인에 입사했지만 법학 공부를 더 하기 위해 대학원 진학도 염두에 두고 있다.
장 양은 앞으로 현지 인맥을 최대한 활용해 한국과 인도네시아 간 관계 증진에 일조하고 싶다는 포부를 밝혔다.
