   알렉스 라르센 아이티 보건장관은 7일(현지시간) 지진 참사 1년에 즈음해 연합뉴스와 가진 인터뷰에서 "한국인들은 아이티에 진정한 도움을 준 사람들 중의 하나다. 콜레라 치료약 등 물질적 지원을 해 줬으며 이는 아이티 국민에게 큰 도움이 될 것"이라고 고마움을 나타냈다.

   한국은 아이티에서 지진참사가 난 뒤로 민간 부문에서 3천500만달러를 지원했으며, 정부는 최근 10만달러의 인도적 지원을 비롯해 모두 1천260만달러에 달하는 무상원조를 제공해 공여국 행렬에 동참했다.

   지진 참사로 청사 건물이 손상돼 1년 가까이 컨테이너 막사생활을 하는 라르센 장관은 계속된 재난과 질병과의 싸움에 지친 듯 피곤해보였다.

   그는 "2010년은 매우 참혹했다. 지진이 나고 태풍이 몰아쳤으며 이제는 전염병이 돌고 있다"면서 "지진이 많은 사람을 죽였다면 콜레라는 더 하다. 태풍보다도 더 하다"며 아이티 전역을 휩쓸고 있는 콜레라의 심각성을 전했다.

라르센 장관은 콜레라가 처음 발생한 북부 아르티보니트강(江) 부근에서 일했던 노동자 2천명이 콜레라에 감염된 뒤 고향으로 돌아가면서 콜레라의 전국적 확산을 가져왔다고 분석하며 "지금은 무엇보다 예방책이 중요한 때"라고 강조했다. 그는 콜레라 퇴치를 위한 예방교육을 실시하고 있다면서 보건교육이야말로 작금의 위태로운 상황을 구할 해결책이라고 덧붙였다.

   그는 "도시에서는 상황이 악화되지 않고 있지만 시골은 매우 심각하다"며 정부의 손길이 미치지 못했던 지방에서 방역과 예방교육을 강화하겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

   아이티는 지난해 10월 19일 아르티보니트강 유역에서 콜레라가 처음 발생한 뒤 수도 포르토 프랭스를 비롯, 전국으로 확산되면서 현재까지 3천500명이 사망하고 15만명이 콜레라에 감염되는 또 한 번의 비극을 맞고 있다.

   라르센 장관은 콜레라 발병당시 2.3%에 달했던 치사율이 현재는 0.5%까지 떨어졌다면서 치사율 비율이 많이 낮아지고 있다고 분석했다.

   반기문 유엔 사무총장은 지난달 유엔총회 보고를 통해 아이티에서 콜레라 감염환자가 향후 6개월간 65만명에 이를 수 있다는 전문가 예측치를 소개하며 사망자수가 현재 파악된 것보다 두 배가 될 수 있다고 경고한 바 있다.
