“’부레옥잠’ 원더풀”아이티 지진참사 재건작업을 위해 한국에서 파병된 단비부대가 ’부레옥잠’을 활용한 부대 폐수 정화로 현지에서 각광을 받고 있다.
단비부대는 주둔지 내 샤워장과 취사장 뒤편에 부레옥잠을 띄운 연못을 만들어 두 곳에서 나오는 생활폐수를 연못에서 거른 뒤 부대 밖 하천으로 배출하고 있다.
연못에 띄워져 있는 수백여개의 부레옥잠들은 샤워장과 취사장에서 나온 폐수 속 불순물을 빨아들여 물이 하천으로 빠져나갈 때에는 환경오염을 최소화할 수 있는 깨끗한 물로 바뀐다는 게 단비부대 측의 설명이다.
관상ㆍ식용식물인 부레옥잠의 수염 같은 잔뿌리들이 물을 썩게 하는 인과 질소를 빨아들인다는 점에 착안한 것이다.
부레옥잠이 가득 메운 연못은 하루 500명이 버리는 폐수를 정화할 수 있다.
