China to launch 1st aircraft carrier in 2011

China plans to launch an aircraft carrier for training within this year after completing work to repair it which it bought from the former Soviet Union, Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported Tuesday. Quoting military experts, Yomiuri said, “The Chinese Navy will begin operation of the aircraft carrier which it bought in 2002 after repair work in Dalian, northeastern China’s Liaoning Province.” The 65,000-ton aircraft carrier is 304 meters long. Construction began in 1985, but stopped with a 70-percent completion as the Soviet Union collapsed. If operation begins, it will be the first aircraft carrier of China which has set the goal of building “Mighty Navy,” Yomiuri said. Military experts said that a photo taken last month shows that the aircraft carrier is topped with a three-dimension radar which did not appear in August last year, it said. The radar is capable of not only controlling takeoff and landing of aircraft but also detecting approaching enemy planes and missiles, Yomiuri said. 위용 드러내는 중국 첫 항모 중국이 옛소련으로부터 구입한 미완성 항공모함의 개조 작업을 연내 마치고 훈련용으로 진수할 것으로 보인다고 일본 요미우리 신문이 4일 보도했다. 신문은 군사전문가들을 인용, “중국이 2002년 사들여 랴오닝성 다롄에서 보수 작업을 진행해왔던 옛소련의 미완성 항모 바랴크함을 올해부터 중국 해군에서 훈련용으로 본격 운영할 것”이라고 전했다. 항모는 길이 304m에 만재배수량이 6만5000t인 중형이다. 1985년 건조를 시작했으나 소련이 무너지면서 약 70%가 완성된 단계에서 중국에 넘어갔다. 신문은 이 함선의 운용이 시작되면 “강대한 해군” 건설을 국가목표로 내세운 중국이 보유하는 첫 항모가 된다고 밝혔다. 전문가에 따르면 지난달 촬영된 사진에는 지난해 8월에는 보이지 않던 3차원 레이더가 함교 최상부에 설치된 것이 확인됐다고 보도는 전했다. 3차원 레이더는 함재기의 이착륙을 유도하고 다가오는 적기나 미사일, 적함을 발견해 항모를 보호할 수 있는 첨단장비다.
