이렇듯 해외서 출시되는 노트북에는 3.5G 무선 모뎀(HSDPA 방식)이 기본적으로 탑재되는 경우가 일반적이다. 이곳에 유심칩을 따로 구입해 장착하면 스마트폰과 마찬가지로 편리하게 무선데이터 통신을 즐길 수 있어 편리하다. 아이패드나 갤럭시탭 등을 떠올리면 이해하기 쉽다.

그러나 국내 출시되는 노트북은 같은 모델이라 하더라도 기능이 아예 빠지는 경우가 대부분이어서 눈길을 끈다. 과거에는 데이터통화료 자체가 워낙에 비싸 소비자들도 엄두를 내지 못했지만, 최근 이통사들이 무제한 요금제나 데이터공유서비스(OPMD) 등을 내놓으며 그 배경에 부쩍 관심이 높아졌다.

■이통사 협조없으면 무용지물

지난 2일 선보인 신형 기가바이트 노트북 'T1125'는 태블릿노트북 제품으로 정전식 멀티터치 스크린과, I3 CPU 코어, USB 3.0 지원은 물론 긴 배터리 구동시간과 경량화로 기능과 휴대성을 모두 겨냥한 제품이다. 

당초 이 제품에는 3.5G 무선 모뎀도 포함돼 있었다. 그러나 국내 수입되는 과정에서 3.5G 무선 모뎀이 삭제됐다. 그 이유에 대해 수입원 측은 국내 시장 수요가 많지 않고 원가를 5~6만원 가량 올리는 요인이 되기 때문에 자체 요청을 통해 삭제했다고 밝혔다.

아울러 3.5G 무선 모뎀의 경우 국내 들여오기 위해서는 전파연구소에 따로 인증을 받아야되는데다가 이동통신사와의 협의가 이뤄져야 하는데 중소기업으로서 이러한 과정이 결코 쉽지 않다고 덧붙였다.

비교적 규모가 큰 대형 업체 역시 마찬가지. HP 한 관계자는 "노트북에서 유심칩을 사용하기 위해서는 이통사가 사전에 허용해야 하는데 현재는 함께 하는 프로그램이 없다"고 말했다.

설령 해외에서 3.5G 무선 모뎀이 장착된 노트북을 구입한다고 해도 국내서는 무용지물이다. 국내서 사용되는 유심칩에는 이통사가 사전에 국제단말기인증번호(IMEI)를 등록한 단말기에서만 작동하도록 하는 잠금 설정이 돼 있기 때문이다.

따라서 3.5G 모뎀이 장착돼 있다고 해도 최근 이동통신사들이 선보인 데이터공유서비스(OPMD)는 이용할 수 없다. 여전히 KT로 출시한 3G 아이패드를 SKT에서 OPMD로 사용할 수 없는 이유와 같다.

■수익은 글쎄?…트래픽 관리에 부정적

이렇듯 국내 이통사들이 노트북 3.5G 무선 모뎀 지원에 관심을 보이지 않는 이유는 가뜩이나 스마트폰의 폭발적인 증가로 트래픽 관리에 어려움을 겪고 있는 가운데 지원 단말기를 늘릴 여력이 없기 때문으로 풀이된다. 

또한 이통사의 주요 수익원인 통화를 제공하지 않는데다가 OPMD 등의 서비스를 선보였지만 이용 요금이 저렴해 이통사 입장에서는 별로 도움이 되지 않는다.

전략적으로 와이브로를 밀고 있는 점도 또 다른 요인이다. 와이브로는 3.5G에 비해 훨씬 속도도 빠르고 이동성도 좋다. 와이브로 가입 대리점들은 노트북과 결합상품을 통해 약정을 걸고 가입자 유치에 열을 올리고 있다. 그러나 여전히 사용 가능 지역이 서울 및 수도권과 광역시에 한정돼 있고 해외 서는 무용지물이라는 점이 걸린다.

업계 한 관계자는 "설령 개인이 전파인증을 받았다고 해도 이통사가 망연동테스트를 해주지 않으면 사용할 방법이 없다"며 "유독 우리나라만 일반 노트북에서 유심칩을 이용할 수 없는 구조로 돼 있다"고 말했다.
