[지디넷코리아]1인기업으로 출발한 SW업체 '링고스타' 윤성관 대표는 자타가 공인하는 애플 마니아다. 20년넘게 애플 매킨토시를 써왔고 맥과 아이폰 개발자 커뮤니티 'OSXDev'도 운영중이다.

그런만큼 그에게 마이크로소프트(MS) 윈도 탐색기는 아직도 어색하기만 하다. 모든 개발이 애플 플랫폼에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 다른 플랫폼에서 기회가 생기더라도, 애플 생태계를 고집하겠단다. 이쯤되면 그는 스티브 잡스를 추종(?)하는 신도 수준으로 봐도 될 것 같다.

■애플 생태계의 매력 

윤 대표가 애플을 고집하는 것은 심리적인 요인도 있지만, 애플 생태계가 그만큼 매력적이라는 것과도 무관치 않다.

애플 생태계는 지금 컴퓨터와 MP3플레이어 그리고 스마트폰을 넘어 태블릿으로까지 확대되고 있는 상황. 디지털 음악, 모바일 애플리케이션, 전자책이 애플 플랫폼을 기반으로 유통된다. 유통량은 갈수록 커지고 있다.

최근에는 애플판 광고 플랫폼까지 등장했다. 윤성관 대표는 "애플은 아이폰이라는 플랫폼을 키우기 위해 앱스토어를 계속 확장하고 있다"며 "앱스토어가 활성화된 이유는 이들 콘텐츠 생산자에게 정당한 대가를 돌아가게 해줬기 때문인데 콘텐츠 생산자들 입장에선 좋은 기회가 열렸다"고 말했다.

개발자인 윤 대표 입장에서 애플은 기술적으로도 매력적이다. 뭔가 다른 지원을 해준다는 것. 그는 "애플은 스마트폰 플랫폼 만드는 회사 가운데 인터페이스와 사용자경험(UX)을 가장 중시한다"며 "애플 플랫폼은 특히 사용자인터페이스(UI) 가이드라인이 잘 정리돼 있다"고 평가했다. 

윤 대표에 따르면 애플 맥과 아이폰 OS 구조는 70~80% 정도 비슷하다.  아이폰 OS가 진화하면서 맥을 닮아가고 있다는 설명이다. 윤 대표는 "아이폰 개발자들은 결국 맥OS를 공부하게 될 것이다"면서  '데스크톱 맥OS가 변화하는 모습을 보면 아이폰OS 변화를 내다볼 수 있다"고 말했다.

윤 대표는 최근 발표한 광고 플랫폼 '아이애드'에도 관심을 가져줄 것을 주문했다. 애플리케이션 시장에서 새로운 가능성을 던져줬다는 것이다.

"출판시장에 비유하면, 애플 출판사가 영업을 해서 작가가 쓴 책에 광고를 집어넣는 겁니다. 작가는 독자가 광고를 보게 하는 대가로 광고 매출 60%를 얻고, 나머지 40%를 출판사가 갖죠. 통신기능이 들어간 단말기라서 위치기반서비스(LBS)와 연계도 되고, 사용자가 다루는 애플리케이션과 관련된 내용을 실어주는 식으로 소구대상이 분명해서 광고효과가 클 거예요." 

최근 앱스토어 애플리케이션 시장은 경쟁이 점점 치열해지고 있다. 거대 기업들까지 뛰어들면서 개인 개발자가 소위, 대박을 터뜨리기가 만만치 않은 상황이다. 아이폰 생태계 내부 경쟁이 그만큼 치열해졌다는 얘기다.

윤 대표도 경쟁의 심화를 인정하면서도 "최근에는 기업을 겨냥한 B2B 애플리케이션 시장이 열리고 있어, 관심을 가져볼만 하다"고 말했다. 아이폰 개발자들은 지금도 부족한 상황이라는 점도 강조했다.

"요즘 안드로이드 애플리케이션 개발하는 기업들이 아이폰용 앱도 만들고 싶어해요. 아이폰 앱 개발 준비하는 사람들은 있는데 진입장벽이 높죠. 안드로이드만큼 개발자가 급격히 늘어날 수 있는 환경이 안되다 보니 아이폰 개발인력 부족 상황이 한동안 계속될겁니다. 아이폰이 단일플랫폼 점유율은 가장 커서 다른 플랫폼 개발보다 경쟁이 덜할 수도 있습니다." 

■안드로이드 생태계에 필요한 것은...

윤성관 대표는 애플과 경쟁하는 구글 안드로이드 플랫폼 역시 발전할 것으로 보고 있다.  개발자 진입장벽도 낮고 공공분야 지원이나 기업시장에서 인력 수요도 많아 안드로이드 기반 단말기와 애플리케이션 생태계도 활성화될 것이란 설명이다.

그러나 애플리케이션 활성화와는 별개로 안드로이드용 애플리케이션을 사고하는 안드로이드 마켓에 대해서도 조심스런 입장을 보였다. 참여하는 업체가 개발자들의 수익성은 물론 애플리케이션 호환성도 장담할 수 없다는 지적이다. 

구글 안드로이드 모바일 플랫폼은 현재 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1 버전이 사용되고 있다. 애플 아이폰을 따라잡기 위해 구글이 안드로이드 개발에 속도를 낸데 따른 결과물이다. 이러다보니 부작용도 적지 않다. 애플리케이션 개발자들은 한두개 버전을 정해놓고 개발하든가 아니면 호환성을 검증하기 위해 많은 테스트를 진행해야 한다. 이는 개발자들이 안드로이드를 멀리하는 계기가 될 수 있다.

윤성관 대표는 "여러 기종에 대응하기 위해 예외처리 투성이인 코드를 만들기 싫어하는 개발자들도 있다"며 "소비자 입장에서 반년쯤 전에 산 애플리케이션을 새 스마트폰에서 쓸 수 없다면 불합리하다고 느낄 것이다"고 말했다. 단말기업체와 이동 통신사간 이해관계도 복잡하게 얽혀있어 모두를 만족시킬 수 있는 상황을 만들기가 쉽지 않다는 점도 지적했다. 그런만큼, 홀세일 애플리케이션 커뮤니티(WAC)같은 통합 앱스토어가 성공하려면 이런점을 해결해야 한다는게 그의 생각이다.

■1인기업으로 성장하려면 

링고스타는 약 3년전 매킨토시 SW를 개발하는 1인기업으로 시작했다. 윤성관 대표는 크게 성공하겠다는 생각으로 1인 기업을 차린 것은 아니다. 특화된 수요를 맞춰가며 자신만의 영역을 구축할 계획이었다.

"규모 키운다는 욕심이 없으면 1인기업도 기술력을 갖추고 살아남을 수 있습니다. 처음부터 규모에 대한 욕심을 가지면 기술력을 갖기 전에 엉뚱한 방향으로 갈 수 있어요. 창업 지원금 정도는 괜찮은데 예를 들어 정부지원과제 같은 것을 하다보면 문서 작업과 담당자 만나는데, 너무 시달려 정작 개발할 시간은 줄어듭니다." 

링고스타는 현재 상근 직원 4명을 둔 기업으로 성장했다. 지난해부터 산학협력사업으로 대학생 인턴 등을 채용하는 등 규모를 늘렸다. 윤성관 대표는 "산학협력 프로젝트로 성과를 꾸준히 내면서 개발 사례와 운영 노하우를 쌓는 중"이라며 "지난해부터 애플리케이션을 만들고 싶었는데 교육수요가 너무 많아 부담이 되는 상황이다"고 말했다.

링고스타는 개발 프로젝트를 본격화하기 위해 이론과 실무 시스템을 더 체계화할 방침이다. 윤성관 대표는 "지금은 아이폰 애플리케이션을 개발시 매번 새로 만드는 단계"라며 "필요한 구성요소(라이브러리)를 갖춰놓고 조합해서 만드는 수준으로 발전시킬 계획"이라고 말했다.
