이런 중국인의 처절한 염원은 실제 생활에서 어떤 모습으로 나타날까. 2007년 세계문화유산에 오른 중국 광둥(廣東)성 카이핑(開平)의 토치카식 주택은 그에 관한 해답을 제공한다. 카이핑이라는 이름 자체가 그렇다. 청(淸)왕조 때 정식으로 현(縣)이 된 카이핑이라는 지명은 ‘개시태평(開始太平)’에서 왔다. 우리말로 옮기자면 ‘이제 태평함으로 들어선다’는 뜻이다. 평안함을 간절히 바라는 차원에서 붙인 지명, 그리고 그곳에는 실제 그런 희구(希求)가 그대로 투영된 주택이 남아 있다. 이곳이 유네스코가 주도하는 세계문화유산의 명단에 오른 이유다.



　그 주택은 한때 3000채까지 지어졌다가 지금은 1833채가 남아 있는 이른바 ‘토치카식 집’이다. 중국어로는 댜오러우(碉樓)라 부른다. 돌집을 뜻하는 ‘조(碉)’라는 글자의 새김이 바로 적의 공세에 맞서기 위해 작은 요새처럼 지은 토치카다.



　적의 공격으로부터 나를 지키려는 군사(軍事)적 용도의 망루(望樓)가 있고, 총안(銃眼)이 있다. 먼저 적을 발견하고 대응하기 위한 건축이 망루요, 다가선 적에게 총이나 활을 겨누고 쏘는 장치가 총안이다. 이런 장치를 갖춘 채 땅에서 우뚝 선 돌집의 견고함과 완강함은 낯선 이의 발걸음을 자연스레 멈추도록 만든다. 나 아닌 다른 사람, 나에게 해를 끼치고자 다가서는 사람, 재물과 인명을 노리고 숨어드는 도적들은 이 견고하고 우람한 돌집에 결코 쉬이 다가설 수가 없다.



　대략 17세기에 지어지기 시작해 20세기 초반에 집중적으로 만들어진 이 집들은 해외로 나가 돈을 벌어들인 화교(華僑)들의 행적과 관련이 깊다. 이들은 험한 세상에 나가 번 돈으로 고향에 돌아와 견고하고 다부진 토치카식 주택을 지었다. 바깥에서 다가오는 위협으로부터 자신과 가족의 생명, 돈과 재물을 지키기 위해서다. 화교들은 또 총과 탄약을 들여오거나 보내왔다. 대도시인 광저우(廣州)에 가까이 붙어 있는 지역임에도 이들은 자신을 위협하는 세력으로부터 스스로를 지키기 위해 이런 집을 짓고 그곳에 무기와 탄약을 쌓아올렸다.



　초기의 토치카식 주택은 ‘임시 대피소’였다. 도적이나 반군(叛軍) 등이 나타나면 잠시 피하는 장소로 사용한 주택 개념이다. 그러나 시간이 흐르면서 도적이나 반란군의 침략에 일시적으로 재물 등을 옮기는 것이 불편해 아예 장기 거주용으로 토치카식 주택을 지었다는 것이다.



　종류는 대개 세 가지다. 우선 중루(衆樓)가 있다. 부유한 형편이 아닌 사람들이 함께 돈을 모아 지은 주택이다. 다음은 거루(居樓)라 분류하는 것으로, 경제적인 형편이 좋은 사람들이 지은 단독 토치카식 주택이다. 그 다음은 갱루(更樓)다. 중루와 거루가 마을 뒤편에 세워졌다면, 이 갱루는 마을 전면에 지어졌다. 멀리 다가서는 적을 미리 발견하기 위한 건조물이다. 이 갱루에 거주하는 사람은 적이 나타날 경우 소리나 불빛으로 마을 전체의 주민에게 적의 출현을 알려야 한다. 말하자면, 일종의 전초(前哨)에 해당한다.



　더 관심을 끄는 것은 이 토치카의 군사적 성격을 알려주는 장치들이다. 대부분의 주택은 견고한 벽으로 이뤄졌다. 주택 안으로 침입하려는 적들의 화공(火攻)에도 끄떡없이 견딜 수 있는 정도다. 그리고 문이 작다. 설령 문이 크게 만들어졌더라도 견고한 철판을 덧붙여 웬만한 충격에도 견딘다. 2층 높이 이상에 난 창문 또한 대부분이 철책으로 둘러쳐져 있다.



　가장 높은 곳은 대개가 돌출형(突出型)이다. 집으로 바짝 다가선 적을 향해 공격을 퍼붓기 위한 설계다. 물론 벽면 곳곳, 높이 돌출한 거주 부분에도 대부분 총안이 나 있다. 밖에서 안으로 향하면서 점점 좁아지는 형태로, 적의 공격을 피하면서 적을 향해 총포와 활을 한결 쉽게 쏠 수 있도록 만들었다.



　망루에서 내다보는 바깥, 총안으로 바라보는 세상…. 망루와 총안은 중국인들이 집의 외부 세계를 관망(觀望)하는 방법에 해당할지 모르는 일이다. 카이핑의 수많은 토치카식 주택은 그런 중국인의 외부 세계 인식을 잘 드러내는 전형(典型)에 해당할 것이다. 그러나 우리가 정작 주목해야 할 것은 그런 집을 짓도록 그들을 몰아갔던 중국의 환경이다. 그것은 크게 전쟁에서부터, 재물을 노리고 들어오는 도적들의 약탈일 것이다.



　불어닥치는 바람과 쏟아지는 비, 풍우(風雨)로부터 제 몸을 지키는 장치가 집이다. 그 바람과 비의 ‘풍우’가 의미하는 바는 비단 자연적인 재해에만 그치지 않는다. 사람끼리의 다툼이 번져 서로 죽이고 죽는 전란(戰亂)이 발생한다면, 그로부터 다시 이어지는 잔인한 살육(殺戮)과 강탈(强奪) 또한 사람이 빚어내는 인문(人文)의 ‘비바람’일 것이다.



　카이핑의 토치카식 주택은 언제 어디서 닥칠지 모를 그런 비바람으로부터 자신을 지키기 위해 지어졌던 ‘중국인의 집’이다. 망루와 총안이 있어 나 아닌 다른 사람을 적(敵)으로 간주할 수밖에 없는, 공격과 방어를 전제로 한 군사적 개념의 주택이다.



　중국을 휩쓴 전쟁의 피바람은 도저(到底)하다. 그 단적인 예를 카이핑의 토치카식 주택이 보여준다. 그러나 그것은 어디까지 한 예일 뿐이다. 전쟁의 참화(慘禍)에 넌덜머리를 일으켜 ‘차라리 태평 시절의 개가 되고 싶다’는 비원을 품었던 중국인과 그들이 지은 군사적 용도의 주택은 아직 많다.



　망루와 총안으로 세상을 내다보는 사람은 늘 싸움의 상대, 적을 상정하게 마련이다. 사람이 보금자리로 인식하는 자신의 집을 그렇게 짓는다면 그 사람의 마음과 사고(思考) 속에는 항상 타인과의 관계를 공격과 방어, 다툼과 경쟁으로 인식하는 세계관이 들어 있을 것이다. 우리는 그런 중국인의 집에 조금씩 들어서고 있다. 다음은 푸젠(福建)의 또 다른 군사적 성격의 주택 투러우(土樓)로 발길을 옮겨보자.

◆토치카=견고한 철근 콘크리트 등으로 구축한 군사 방어 시설의 일종이다. 기관총을 발사할 수 있는 하나의 총안(銃眼)만을 갖춘 단순한 형태에서부터, 2~3층 높이로 구축한 뒤 소총이나 기관총, 대포·대전차포 등 각종 화기를 발사할 수 있는 형태도 있다. 아울러 지휘 및 통신, 수비 병력의 거주까지 가능한 대규모 시설을 갖춘 곳도 있다. 철조망, 지뢰지대 등과 함께 배치해 적의 공격을 효율적으로 막는 데 쓰인다.
