'Stealth' trains prepared for Kim Jong-il

/ Courtesy of JoongAng Ilbo North Korea has tightened security for its leader Kim Jong-il, 69, and his heir, Kim Jong-un, 27, the JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported, quoting South Korean and U.S. intelligence sources. As part of tighter security, North Korea installed a “stealth” net on trains for Kim Jong-il late last year, the report said. The measure was construed as its intention to evade radar of U.S.’ U-2 reconnaissance aircraft or video signals of U.S. intelligence satellites. A source said the so-called (stealth) net is in the form of slim film containing radar absorbent material (RAM), according to the report. Once trains North Korean leaders board are dressed with the film, it is difficult to detect their location, he said on condition of anonymity. South Korean authorities have said they are mostly able to detect where Kim Jong-il is via satellites. Sources said North Korea has been particularly on the alert for any activities of U.S. F-22 Raptors stationed in U.S. bases in Japan, the report said. 김정일 ‘스텔스 열차’ 탄다  북한이 김정일 (69) 국방위원장과 후계자인 김정은 (27) 노동당 중앙군사위 부위원장에 대한 신변 경호를 부쩍 강화했다고 중앙일보가 한, 미 정보 소식통을 인용 보도했다. 한, 미 정보 당국이 파악한 데 따르면 북한은 지난해 말 김정일 전용열차에 스텔스 기능을 갖춘 특수 그물망을 설치했다는 것. 이 같은 조치는 미국의 대북감시 첩보위성이나 U-2 정찰기의 레이더 영상신호를 약화시키거나 따돌리기 위한 조치로 분석됐다고 이 보도는 전했다. 정보 소식통은 ‘그물망 (net)’으로 통칭되는 이 설비는 실제로는 RAM(radar absorbent material 레이더 흡수물질)이 포함된 얇은 필름 형태”라고 설명했다. 이 필름을 열차 표면에 감싸듯 입힐 경우 열차 내 김정일 등 핵심 인물의 움직임이나 이동 경로 등을 포착하는 데 어려움을 겪게 된다고 익명을 요구한 이 소식통이 밝혔다. 정부 당국자들은 그동안 “김 위원장이 어느 지방에 있는지 위성을 통해 대체로 파악하고 있다”고 말해 왔다. 특히 북한은 주일미군에 배치된 미국의 스텔스 전투기 F-22(랩터) 활동에 촉각을 곤두세우고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
