A worldwide notorious hacker officially announced retirement on Oct. 29. The name is still unknown, but the hacker, the inventor of the spy software ZeuS, is a genius programmer. A security official from the U.S. said the hacker is assumed to live in Russia. According to the security regulatory authority, the cost of the worldwide property damage caused by the ZeuS is estimated at over $100 million. Penetrating into the network of an enterprise or a financial institution and easily breaking the password, the ZeuS has been a headache. The hacker has never committed a crime using the software and has only sold it to others. So far, the lowest price for the ZeuS has been $1,000. On the other hand, the software specially designed on request has brought the hacker quite a profit. The main customers are criminal rings. Since the hacker answer to the buyers 24 hours a day 7days a week, the number of customers is rising every day. Instead of welcoming the hacker’s retirement, the security regulatory authority is not satisfied with the announcement due to the hacker’s history of releasing up–to-date spy software after making the same announcement in 2007 and 2008. For this reason, they are rather worried about the hacker’s return with new software far worse than the ZeuS. Meanwhile, there are voices the announcement may be true this time since the hacker might have lost motivation after making a fortune. Criminal groups usually attack small and medium enterprises and smaller financial firms with the ZeuS. Banks are often avoided because of their strong security system.
