튀니지 혁명은 지난해 12월 17일 20대 청년 과일 노점상 모하메드 부아지지가 경찰의 물품 압수 조치에 분신자살을 시도한 것이 불씨가 됐다. 부아지지는 대학을 졸업하고도 취업을 못해 무허가 노점상을 운영했던 것으로 알려졌다. 현재 튀니지의 공식 실업률은 14%다. 15세~29세에 이르는 청년실업률은 30%에 이른다. 

이후 청년실업, 인플레이션에 항의하는 튀니지 시위가 정권 퇴진, 민주화 요구 시위로 확산되자, 벤 알리 대통령은 지난 14일 가족과 함께 사우디아라비아로 피신했다.

튀니지 혁명은 위키리크스와 SNS를 통해 확산됐다는 점에서 ‘위키리크스 혁명’, ‘페이스북 혁명’, ‘트위터 혁명’ 등의 이름을 얻었다. 전 세계 언론은 향후 민주화 운동이 비슷한 상황의 알제리, 예맨 등 인근 국가로 확산될 것이라 전망했다. 

이런 가운데 스웨덴에서 강간 등의 혐의로 영국에서 구속된 위키리크스 창업자 줄리언 어샌지는 16일, 체포된지 9일 만에 보석으로 풀려났다. 스웨덴 당국은 보석 후에도 수사를 계속하겠다며 범죄인 인도를 요구한 상태다.
